History of Opportunity House

Opportunity House has been in Sheridan for almost 12 years.  It started out on Monroe Street in 1996, and moved to its current location next to Sheridan High School in 1998.  The program was designed to serve the need for the estimated 130 students, dropped-out from school, in the West Valley

In the past 11 years, over 300 students have graduated from the Opportunity House.  The school currently serves parenting teens, adults and high school students unable to fit into the ‘traditional’ setting due to innumerable circumstances.  Opportunity House awards an accredited diploma backed by North West Accreditation Association. Diplomas earned through Opportunity House are accepted by any accredited college, job, or armed force.

Former students are always stopping by visiting and bringing news of their recent successes.  Some graduates have gone on to college, while others have become entrepreneurs starting businesses such as Program Directors helping other young parenting adults cope with these troubled times.  Other still have settled in the West Valley with their families and are working locally.  They have become a valuable part of our local community.  Opportunity House graduates have entered every branch of the military except the Coast Guard. At least two of these, one Army and one Navy, intend on making this their career path.

Opportunity House graduates are our local community’s success story and part of the proud tradition of working hard to achieve a goal that sometimes seems insurmountable.  This is evident with the fact that many of our students are the first in their immediate family to ever complete high school.
