Michael Griffith

Position 1

June 30, 2021

About: I am a U.S. Air Force veteran and spent one year in Viet Nam. After my discharge from the military, I attended community colleges in the southern California area. I transferred to California State University Long Beach and received a degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology. After college, I began working for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (B.O.P.). In 1989, I was transferred from Spokane, Washington to the new prison in Sheridan. I was part of the activation team. When the prison opened I was one of the Unit Managers responsible for two of the housing units in the main prison. In 1993, I was promoted to Discipline Hearing Officer and was responsible for holding administrative hearings in all incidents requiring discipline. I retired from the B.O.P. in early 2007. I am married to Laura and we have two sons and a daughter. My sons, Jack and Nick, both graduated from Sheridan High School. My daughter, Jenny is currently in the fourth grade at Falconer/Chapman school. About eight years ago, just out of curiosity, I attended a school board meeting. I received a lot of valuable information from theses meetings. A short time later, I became a member of the budget committee. In 2013, I ran for a position on the school board and was elected to a four year term.I think every child has the potential and ability to learn. As a board member, every decision we make, we have to ask ourselves; How will this effect the kids in the district. I really enjoy being part of the Sheridan School District. We have great students and staff!

About:  I attended the Sheridan School District from Kindergarten until I graduated high school in 2001. Now my two oldest daughters attend Sheridan schools and my son will once he is old enough. My family owns a small farm outside of Sheridan in the Buell area where we manage cattle, goats, chickens, turkeys and trees. My husband and I also own a small woodworking business which I operate on the farm while my children are at school. I have also been very active in the Sheridan FFA Alumni over the years and have worked alongside many volunteers to keep that program strong for future students. I also serve as a 4-H leader in Polk County and currently hold the position of the Vice President of the Leaders Association. In the summers I travel a lot around Oregon and Washington judging goats and poultry at different county fairs which I have been doing for 18 years now. I am new to the school board but thankful I have an opportunity to make a difference in the very school district my children are growing up in.

Position 2

About: This will be my 15th year as part of the Sheridan School Board. I currently work for Macy’s as a store engineer and have for the past 10 years. I have had two kids work their way through the Sheridan School District. My son Briston went on to graduated from Southern Oregon with a major in International Business. My daughter spent her junior and senior year at SHS and just finished teaching abroad. My start in the school board was unusual. In 2002, the board had a recall and I was drafted. But more than that, I felt like I could make a change. 15 years later… I am still here. I believe all students should get an education. That may not end for all students in college, however, students should have a professional pathway in which they feel successful and enjoy.

Position 4

About: I am currently an Administrative Assistant at Sheridan Fire District. I have daughters that have all attended Sheridan School District. Two of my daughters graduated from Sheridan Schools. I chose to join the Sheridan Schools board as a chance for me to give back and make a difference in my community. My educational motto: I want all students to learn, grow and succeed in our District, I just wish that a solution to the funding issues could be found, especially with all the non funded requirements that are put on Districts.

About: I currently serve as the Information Systems Director at the City of McMinnville. I have been employed with the City for 11 years, and have a strong background in civic leadership and public organizations. I graduated from Eastern Washington University with a BS in Computer Science and have lived in the Sheridan area for the last 8 years. I currently have two sons enrolled in the Sheridan School District. I believe Public Education is the one of the most important common experiences that a majority of adults share with each other. Every student in the Sheridan School District has the potential for high achievement and I look forward to serving on the School Board to help sustain and advance the environment that allows them to reach that potential.
